The internet is everywhere but your laptop might not be

Many people rely on their laptops to stay productive while traveling. However, following last week's terrorist threats, airport authorities introduced no hand luggage policies. Many companies decided that staff should leave laptops at home rather than check them in as baggage, leaving affected employees disconnected from their work once they reached their destination. Companies seeking to enable uninterrupted access to all work related material, without a personal laptop, might choose to utilizee a secure online collaboration portal.
Even if a laptop is checked in, most airlines exclude this from any cover and will not accept responsibility for checked computers. By having data accessible on a secure web site, you can be assured that you your information will be available at the other end.
To avoid potential problems, it will be best to change the reliance on personal laptops that can get damaged or lost to a secure web collaboration site that can be accessed anywhere and from any internet connected computer.

Working from home

The WSJ is reporting that working from home will continue to become more popular in the foreseeable future. This will provide a real boost to online collaboration sites as these workers try to optimize their productivity using internet tools.
It follows that companies will continue to reach out to these home based employees with intranets and custom built collaboration web sites. If you also factor in time saved in not commuting, savings with reduced gas use as well as environmental benefits, there are many reasons that working from home makes good sense.

Girls Gone Wired

A survey conducted by female owned and operated US cable television’s Oxygen Network has found that diamonds are no longer a girl’s best friend.
Girsl Gone Wired, the survey, found that three of four women would prefer a new plasma TV to a diamond necklace. Women were found on average to own 6.6 technology devices while men own 6.9, and four out of every five women felt comfortable using technology with 46 percent doing their own computer trouble-shooting.
Other interesting stats:

  • 56 percent would opt for a new plasma TV over a weekend vacation in Florida
  • 86 percent would prefer a new digital video camera to a pair of designer shoes
  • 77 percent of women surveyed would prefer a new plasma television to a diamond solitaire necklace
  • Myself being a bit of a female technophile - well totally female and somewhat of a technophile - I fit into the majority of girls who prefer technology over the traditional girlie gift. The only one I don’t agree with is the trip to Florida, I would take sun any day over a plasma TV. But maybe that comes from the fact that I know that our house could not really accomodate a 42″ - I’m quite happy with our surround sound TV. Overall, seems like a good study reinforcing that women and technology is not such a foreign thing and that it should be a given that people take notice of the growth of this/us as a group of people. The design of specific female centric games, devices and the accompanying marketing is something that alot of people can take advantage of as the appearance of the female geek is on the rise.
